Cam Muong festival

When Spring comes, Lao ethnic people in Lai Chau Province organise their traditional Cam Muong Festival to pray to the Gods of the rivers and mountains, as well as their ancestors, for blessing. On the last morning of lunar December there are boisterous drumbeats everywhere.

For the worshipping ceremony, the sorcerer prepares seven trays of offerings, including silver necklaces and bracelets, white coarse cloth, brocade cloth, betel and areca nuts, lime, several threads coated with beeswax, bows and arrows, sword, wooden spinning tops, etc. At noon, a procession, led by people carrying trays of offerings on their heads, followed by a sorcerer, old people and the villagers, go into the forest, beating drums and gongs. In the forest, a bamboo-worshipping house with a wooden floor is erected under a big tree.

Da Lat Flower Festival to be held in 2010

The Lam Dong provincial People’s Committee has decided to reschedule the Da Lat Flower Festival from 2009 to 2010 to coordinate with the 1000th anniversary of Thang Long – Hanoi.

The event, previously scheduled for December 19-23, 2009, will be held from January 1-4, 2010.

Con Temple Festival

Con Temple FestivalTime: The 19th to the 21st day of the first lunar month.
Place: Phuong Can Village, Quynh Phuong Commune, Quynh Luu District, Nghe An Province.
Objects of worship: Duc Thanh Mau, the Holy Mother – one of four goddesses (she protects and supports for villagers to have prosperous life, helping the armies cross the ocean safe and sound).
Characteristics: Game of mimic navy battle.

Con Temple is one of the most sacred temples in Nghe An. It was built in 1235 under Tran Dynasty and situated near by sea gate of Lach Con, among a charming mountains and water area. Con Temple Festival opens with boats decorated with flags, flowers, the sounds of drums and gongs. The game of mimic navy battle is related to the legend of building temple. The game includes blue and red troops which are fought on an obstacles and difficult of access range of mountain from Oi Village to Con Temple. Mimic battle is held every 3-year. Among which, the custom of oi running is unique feature of Con Temple Festival. It involves many traditional games: fairy swinging, wrestling, human chess playing, dragon boat racing, Vietnamese opera (tuong), popular opera (cheo), chau van songs… At the end of the festival are the ceremonies of praying for peaceful life, good fortune, thanksgiving, consult a fortuneteller…

Festival to be held in war-torn province

Quang Tri citadel A festival and cultural exchange entitled “War Memories and a Desire for Peace” will be held in Quang Tri Province, the scene of some fiercest fighting during the US war, to mark the 62nd anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs’ Day (July 27).

At a press briefing in Hanoi on July 15, the programme’s sponsors said that the event will take place from July 24-26, including a requiem to pray for the fallen soldiers’ souls at the Road No. 9 Cemetery and a ceremony to inaugurate a wharf to drop flowers in the Thach Han River.

The focus of the programme will be cultural exchange, with documentary films, art performances and a meeting with veterans who fought on the Quang Tri battlefield. Read the rest of this entry »

Thang Long cuisine in the heart of Southern Vietnam

A culinary festival will be held in Ho Chi Minh City to introduce the unique cuisine of Thang Long-Hanoi to local residents. They will have a chance to savour authentic Hanoi cuisine and experience the rural ambience of northern Vietnam at a three-day event held to mark the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long- Hanoi.

The festival named “Thang Long Citadel cuisine in South Vietnam” at Van Thanh Tourism Park would introduce “significant cultural traits and folk cuisine of the North. The event, organised by the HCMC Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism will open on December 11. Read the rest of this entry »

Original An Giang cow racing festival

The final track of cow racing has held in Vinh Trung village, Tinh Bien district in An Giang province with much excitement and amazement on September 18th 2009. The play station was filled with 30.000 audiences with muddy and puddly racing track and amazing spirit. There are total 72 pairs of cows coming from Khmer ethnic minority in Tinh Bien, Tri Ton, Chau Thanh and Chau Phu districts of An Giang joining this special racing.

This is a traditional and featured festival in Bay Nui (Seven mountains) area which was held in the occasion of  Sen Dolta Festival (the 8th month according to lunar calendar annually) when the farmers finish sowing  the final crop ò the year.

Each pair of cows are tethered the harrow and managed by a man. Each competition includes 2 pairs, following direct elimination rule. They will race 3 rounds attractively and then try their best to reach the target.

Do Son Buffalo Fight festival

Do Son festival

Time: The 9th day of the eighth lunar month.
Place: Do Son Dist., Haiphong City.
Objects of worship: Water genie.
Characteristics: Buffalo fighting, the cult of water genie

The Buffalo Fight in Do Son (Haiphong City) is officially held every year on the 9th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar. There are, in fact, two rounds of elimination before the middle of the fifth month and 8th day of the sixth lunar month.

The preparation for this festival is very elaborate. Fighting buffaloes must be carefully selected, well fed, and trained. These buffaloes must be between 4 and 5 years old, with a good appearance, a wide chest, a big groin, a long neck, an acute bottom, and bow shaped horns. Kate Festival

The Cham peoples Kate Festival lasts three days on a large area, from tower temple (Bi mon or Ka lan) to villages (Paley) to each family (Nga wom). This is the most unique festival of the Cham community. It is not kate festivalonly connected with ancient tower temples where the highest technical and aesthetic values of Cham culture are stored but also other cultural aspects such as votive things, costumes, music instruments, and songs praising kings who made great service to the country and people. The festival is also an occasion where the participants can enjoy unique folk singing, dancing and music. They can dance with Cham girls and relax with Gi nang drumming and Saranai trumpeting. Perfume Pagoda festival

Huong pagoda festivalApproximately 70 kilometers southwest of Ha Noi, Huong Son boasts quite a few pagodas built in the Posterior Le Dynasty. Until the beginning of the 20th century, there have over 100 pagodas. Visitors can go to Huong Son via the Ha Dong – Van Dinh route.

Vietnamese or foreigners alike wish to come to Huong Son in springtime. Heading there tourists come to a magnificent land, a famous beauty spot in Vietnam.

Going boating in Yen Stream, visitors get a stunning view of the landscape in springtime. Here lies Ngu Nhac Mountain, there stand Hoi Bridge, Dun and Voi Phuc (Prostrating Elephant) mountains. Then come Thuyen Rong (Dragon Boat) and Con Phuong (Phoenix) mountains, not to mention various other mountains named after their shape like Ong Su (Buddhist Monk), Ba Vai (Buddhist nun), Mam Xoi (Tray of Sticky Rice), Trong (Drum), or Chieng (Gong). Quan Am Festival

Time:  From the 18th to the 20th day of the second lunar month, the main festival day is on the 19th day of the second lunar month.
Place: Avalokitesvara Pagoda, Ngu Hanh Son DQuan Am festivalistrict,Da Nang City.
Objects of worship: Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva.
Characteristics: The procession of the statue of Avalokitesvara Bodhisttava, floating lamps on the river and other philanthropic activities.

Quan Am (Avalokitesvara) Festival on Ngu Hanh Son, Da Nang is organized on the 19th day of the second lunar month. Like other traditional festivals, Quan Am (Avalokitesvara) Festival on Ngu Hanh Son, Da Nang consists of two parts: the religious ceremony and the festival itself.
